So far this year, more than five hundred people have suffered traffic accidents resulting in their death. Clearly, the figure has increased compared to last year, taking into account the lockdown period in 2020. It is one of the main causes of death in the country, and for that reason the Direcci\u00f3n General de Tr\u00e1fico (DGT) is committed to implementing changes in the regulations.<\/p>\n

New maximum driving speeds<\/h3>\n

With regard to speed, the DGT is introducing new maximum limits. Based on this, on conventional roads it will no longer be possible to overtake another vehicle by increasing speed more than 20 km\/h, nor to maintain that speed during the overtaking manoeuvre. This measure is intended to prevent head-on collisions and reduce damage in the event of impact.<\/p>\n

Cyclists are also in the spotlight: they may only be overtaken by keeping a minimum safety distance of at least 1.5 metres. Now, in addition, the new regulation requires drivers to slow down when overtaking.<\/p>\n

Within cities that have roads with only one lane in each direction, the speed limit is reduced to 30 km\/h. However, on roads with two or more lanes, it will still be possible to reach the currently permitted 50 km\/h. It remains to be seen whether this measure will eventually lead to the removal of speed bumps in cities. Furthermore, on roads with a single-level platform for roadway and pavement on both sides, speeds must not exceed 20 km\/h.<\/p>\n

Mobile phone and seatbelt use<\/h3>\n

Here we see penalties with points being deducted from the driver\u2019s licence in the event of offences directly related to the driver\u2019s safety and that of vehicle occupants.<\/p>\n

Thus, mobile phone use will be penalised with a reduction of 3 to 6 points, and the incorrect use of safety measures such as the seatbelt, helmet, or child restraint systems will result in a deduction of 3 to 4 points.<\/p>\n

Speed cameras, emergency lights, and pedestrians<\/h3>\n

There are various applications and devices designed to warn drivers about the strategic locations of speed cameras<\/strong><\/a>, which control speed. Using radar detection systems will be recorded and penalised with a loss of 3 points and a \u20ac500 fine.<\/p>\n

Previously, when we had a breakdown or incident on the road, we were required to alert other drivers by using traditional emergency triangles. Now, changes are being implemented \u2014 these elements will be replaced by V-16 flashing beacons from 2026.<\/p>\n

Along with cyclists, pedestrians account for 48% of those killed in road traffic accidents. Drivers must therefore respect pedestrian priority and be alert when on foot. Failing to do so \u2014 particularly in clear cases such as pedestrian crossings \u2014 is punishable by a \u20ac200 fine and the loss of up to 4 points from your licence.<\/p>\n
