Do not keep the engine idling<\/h2>\n

Although it might not seem like it, keeping the engine idling uses between 0.5 and 0.7 litres per hour. For this reason, it is advisable to turn off the engine when stopped for long periods.<\/p>\n

When driving in cities where you may encounter several pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, frequent stops are to be expected. For these situations, most modern cars are equipped with the Start-Stop system. The main function of this system is to switch off the engine during idle times, helping to save fuel. Use the correct gears and avoid over\u2011revving the engine<\/h2>\n

When it comes to gears, making the most of when to shift in order to avoid over\u2011revving the engine will help you save fuel. Whenever possible, drive in higher gears \u2014 fourth or fifth \u2014 for as long as you can, and avoid pressing the accelerator to the floor.<\/p>\n

When going uphill, if your car is equipped with it, use the hill-start assist feature. This system will not only make driving easier but will also automatically lock the ESP brakes to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting off on an incline, without the need to over\u2011rev.<\/p>\n
