During the current months, when the winter cold is felt daily, caring for your car\u2019s engine becomes essential to ensure optimal performance and, in this way, avoid possible breakdowns and inconveniences.<\/p>\n

Keep reading to learn more about the engine and the issues that can arise when temperatures are really low.<\/p>\n

Why does fuel consumption increase?<\/h2>\n

Fuel consumption can rise between 10% and 15% when the thermometer drops. While at first glance these figures may not seem significant, in the current context this results in a considerable increase in costs during the coldest months.<\/p>\n

Engine temperature<\/h3>\n

One of the main reasons. With cold weather, the engine takes longer to reach an optimal operating temperature. Therefore, the propulsion system requires more fuel during the initial moments to produce the same results as in milder conditions.<\/p>\n

This not only means higher consumption and thus higher economic costs, but also a significant increase in pollutant emissions. In this regard, coolant is another key element, so it is advisable to check levels regularly.<\/p>\n

Oil temperature<\/h3>\n

When the oil does not reach its optimal temperature, its lubricating properties decrease. As a result, components experience greater resistance to movement due to increased friction. This means more energy\u2014i.e., more fuel\u2014is required to keep them moving. This is why pre-heating the engine is often recommended.<\/p>\n

Less efficient battery<\/h3>\n

The vehicle\u2019s alternator has to work harder than usual to generate the electrical energy the car demands. Consequently, fuel consumption also increases. The battery plays an important role here\u2014depending on its quality, the fuel impact will be greater or lesser.<\/p>\n

Tyre pressure<\/h3>\n

At various times, as a windshield workshop specialising in the automotive sector, we have emphasised how essential it is to drive with tyres in excellent condition. Specifically, tyre pressure is key to keeping fuel consumption under control.<\/p>\n

In winter, the air inside the tyres cools down. Consequently, tyre pressure drops below the usual and recommended levels. The increased rolling resistance and friction with the asphalt raise fuel consumption.<\/p>\n

Some tips to avoid damaging the engine<\/h2>\n

As we\u2019ve seen, cold weather can pose real challenges for driving. That\u2019s why, at Autocristal Ralarsa, we suggest some recommendations you can follow to avoid damage.<\/p>\n

First, make sure you use quality antifreeze in the correct quantities to prevent coolant from freezing. Likewise, the oil must also be suitable\u2014follow the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations and choose one with the right viscosity.<\/p>\n

Also, don\u2019t forget to check that the battery is in good condition<\/strong><\/a> and replace it if necessary. Keeping the battery charged will prevent starting issues. As for the radiator, make sure it is free from ice and snow obstructions\u2014something that happens more often than we think.<\/p>\n

Finally, to make starting the car easier on very cold days, use the engine heater before starting. This will improve oil flow.<\/p>\n
