There are many myths about window tinting. Some people believe it is not legal, and others believe it is, and in fact, it is legal. It is legal to tint the rear windows and illegal to do so with the front windows. The front windows may only be darkened in the case of illness or for security reasons for official vehicles. Apart from these two exceptions, tinting front car windows is not allowed, as it is prohibited to obscure the driver’s identity.

Current window tinting regulations since 2010

The BOE (Official State Gazette) published on July 24, 2010, the regulation that is still in force regarding tinted glass. Here are the most important points of this law:

  1. In Spain, it is completely forbidden to tint the front car windows, those of the driver and the front passenger. The installation of tint within a 180º angle of the driver’s field of vision is illegal. It is possible to apply side and thermal lamination to vans and passenger cars. In the case of illnesses such as lupus or any other in which sunlight affects the driver, you can request a transparent laminate. Official vehicles, for example, can indeed install a safety film on the front windows.
  2. All films installed on a vehicle must be approved by the Ministry of Industry. Manufactured films must pass certain resistance and material composition tests at a certified centre. At Ralarsa window tinting workshops, we offer the highest quality in all our services.
  3. The installation must meet minimum quality requirements. In the car window tinting process, there must be no sign that it is losing adhesion, and bubbles larger than 2 mm in diameter are not accepted. On the other hand, dust particles are not an issue.
  4. It is very important to carry the required documentation containing the vehicle’s technical sheet. Carrying the car’s technical sheet is essential in case you are stopped by the police and asked for the industry’s certificate for the darkened films. Failure to carry this documentation results in a fine of 200 euros. At Ralarsa window tinting workshops, we comply perfectly with the regulations set by law.

Possible infractions and fines

Types of infractions: Breaking this rule results in a fine ranging from 36 euros to 150 euros. In addition, it is absolutely necessary for this type of modification to come with a homologation certificate to accompany the vehicle’s technical sheet. The manufacturer of the films is responsible for providing the certificate, and the workshop is the one who completes it. Windows must be properly finished with stickers or some kind of marking. Failure to meet these requirements for window tinting may result in an unfavourable ITV inspection and a fine.

Economic sanctions: In order to tint rear car windows, it is necessary to comply with current regulations. Everything must be correctly approved, and you must have the certificate indicating in which workshop the tinting was carried out. In Spain, tinting is completely legal as long as it does not interfere with the driver’s vision (180º forward). There are some exceptions that allow the front windows to be laminated, such as: official vehicles, people with certain illnesses, and people under threat.
