How to deal with a hailstorm in the car?

It’s possible that at some point you’ve been caught driving in adverse weather conditions. With the increasing signs of climate change, it can even hail during hot seasons like summer. And a weather event like this can cause various damage, both material and personal.

At Ralarsa, as a specialist automotive glass workshop, we’ll explain how to deal with hail on your car and what to do if you’ve suffered damage and need repairs. Visit your nearest Ralarsa centre and make sure your vehicle is always in optimal condition. We look forward to seeing you!

How to protect your car during a hailstorm?

When driving on the road, we must do so with our full attention. Even more so when faced with unexpected situations like hail. Here are some tips to help you handle a storm in the best possible way:

  • First and foremost, if possible, stop and park until the storm passes. Ideally, find a safe spot, such as a service road or another location that ensures you don’t block other vehicles. This way, by not driving, you minimise the risk of accidents.
  • If stopping and parking aren’t possible, you must drive with extreme caution. This means staying focused and calm. It’s also essential to pay attention to the road surface to spot areas that provide the best grip. Watching the taillights of the cars ahead is also useful for following their path, as well as spotting obstacles or hazards in time to brake gently.
  • When a storm arrives, visibility drops drastically. Therefore, it’s important to be seen —keep your headlights on and, in more extreme conditions, use your rear fog lights. Avoid using high beams, as they can have the opposite effect.
  • Other ways to stay visible to other drivers include increasing the safety distance from the car in front. The more space between you and them, the more time you’ll have to react. To avoid skidding and losing control, brake gently and avoid long, hard braking.

How to repair your car after a hailstorm?

If hail caught you while driving and your car suffered damage, there are effective ways to repair it and restore its original appearance.

If your car’s glass is broken, at Ralarsa we specialise in repairing glass without replacing it. Most insurance policies cover this service with no penalty to the policyholder — it does not count as a claim. We have a network of over 230 specialised glass repair centres and, if you prefer, we can perform the service at your home.

If repair is not possible, we also offer a glass replacement service. Additionally, we recommend that before travelling, you have your vehicle serviced, check the lighting system and tyre pressure. You can also opt for a rain‑repellent treatment, which makes water slide off the glass, improving visibility and reducing the need to use wipers.

Does insurance cover hail damage to your car?

The Insurance Compensation Consortium is the organisation responsible for covering expenses caused by hail damage. This body covers repairs according to the terms of your insurance policy.

A basic third‑party policy does not cover hail damage, but if you have extended coverage that includes glass and weather damage, the repair will be covered. Fully comprehensive insurance does include this type of repair.
