In 2006, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) implemented the new points-based driving licence system. This new licence system was created with the aim of reducing road accidents on Spanish roads.
With this system, introduced in 2006, each driver has a number of points which are deducted in the event of committing certain offences. Since it came into force more than 15 years ago, a total of 200,000 drivers have lost all their points, a fact that prevents them from being able to drive until they have fully regained them.
From Ralarsa, as the network of workshops where you can repair car glass, we tell you below the two ways in which you can recover your licence points.
The first option is to go two years without committing offences. In this way, you will have the initial 12 points again, even if you are a new driver and started with a total of 8 points. According to the new Road Safety Law approved and coming into force in March of this year, the penalty period has been unified. That is, from now on the penalty period is set at two years, whereas previously it varied depending on the offence committed.
However, there is a second option that allows you to reduce this two-year period. This involves taking a voluntary road safety awareness and re-education course lasting about twelve hours, which can grant up to six points. It should be noted that this course can only be taken once every two years or once a year for professional drivers.
Thus, as a workshop where you can repair car glass, we highlight that these two options are only valid for drivers who have not lost all their points. If this is the case, their licence will have expired, and they will face another type of sanction.
Having lost the driving licence, the driver must obtain the permit again. To recover it, they must complete a driving licence recovery course on road safety awareness and re-education, the cost of which is borne by the offender. This course lasts 24 teaching hours and can be carried out during the period of licence withdrawal. In addition, a theory test must be passed once the course has been completed.
