How do weather conditions affect car windows?

The windows of a vehicle are essential components that are constantly exposed to weather conditions, which can often be adverse. Weather and temperature can affect the performance and durability of the glass, potentially resulting in broken car glass and the need for a windshield replacement.

Below, from Ralarsa, car glass workshop, we explain how different weather conditions affect vehicle glass and what measures can be taken to reduce these effects.

Low temperatures

With low temperatures, ice formation and snow presence may compromise the effectiveness of the glass. Ice can affect visibility and even damage the glass. For this reason, it is recommended to use defrosters and ice scrapers; it can also be beneficial to use anti-freeze products in the windshield washer fluid to prevent freezing.

Trying to remove ice with hot water can be fatal for the glass and require a windshield replacement, since a sudden temperature change can cause it to break. Vehicle glass is made from materials that expand and contract with temperature changes. In cold weather, glass contracts, and in heat, it expands. Constant expansion and contraction can wear down the glass and possibly cause small cracks.

The temperature contrast can also cause moisture in the interior air to condense on the cold glass surface, fogging it up and affecting visibility.

Sun exposure and high temperatures

High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can cause long-term damage to vehicle glass. Sun rays can damage windshield materials, making them more fragile over time. In addition, constant sun exposure can cause cracks in windshields and wear on window seals. For this reason, it is highly recommended to use sunshades when parking and to regularly maintain the air conditioning system to help minimise these effects.

And watch out for temperature changes! Glass materials expand in heat, putting pressure on the glass sealing system, and over time, this could result in problems such as water leaks, which would require visiting a car glass workshop.

Hail and storms

Hailstorms present a great risk to vehicle glass. Hailstones can cause dents, cracks, and even broken glass. To avoid this, it is recommended to park your vehicle in a safe place during a hailstorm or when there is a chance of one.

Rain can affect visibility through the glass. Water droplets can create distortions on the windshield, making it harder for the driver to see. To counteract this effect, it is essential to keep the wipers in good condition and to use water-repellent products to improve vision during rain.
