The importance of the DGT environmental label

The importance of the DGT environmental label

Sustainable mobility has become essential to address climate change and improve quality of life in our cities. For this reason, the Directorate‑General for Traffic (DGT) has implemented the Environmental Label, an initiative aimed at promoting the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles and reducing pollutant emissions.

Below, we present everything you need to know about the DGT environmental label and how to find out which label your vehicle should carry, highlighting the importance of sustainability in glass repair and car glass replacement at our automotive glass workshop to help reduce harmful emissions to the environment.

What is the DGT environmental label and what is it for?

This environmental badge is designed to classify vehicles based on their pollutant emission levels and environmental impact. It is a classification provided via a sticker in different colours and letters, allowing certain vehicles to enter areas of the city with higher pollution levels, thus promoting cleaner, more efficient options.

The DGT environmental label not only provides information about a vehicle’s emissions but also grants various benefits and imposes restrictions in certain areas. Cities and municipalities can incentivise the access and parking of vehicles with cleaner labels, while restricting circulation of those with higher environmental impact.

The DGT has established four main categories of environmental labels, each identified by a colour and a graphic emblem:

Zero label (blue). Electric vehicles, plug‑in hybrids with minimum electric range, and vehicles running on natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Eco label (green and blue). Non‑plug‑in hybrid vehicles, gasoline or diesel vehicles with the DGT ECO label, and those running on natural gas or LPG.

C label (green). Gasoline vehicles registered from January 2006 onwards and diesel vehicles from 2014 onwards. Also includes some hybrid and gas‑powered vehicles.

B label (yellow). Gasoline vehicles registered from January 2000 onwards and diesel vehicles from January 2006 onwards.

How can you find out which DGT environmental label your car has?

The DGT environmental label is essential for understanding your vehicle’s environmental impact. To find out which label you should have, check your vehicle registration certificate, which details emissions and fuel type as well as the registration date. The vehicle’s technical sheet also offers crucial information about emissions and engine type.

Additionally, the DGT provides online tools and mobile applications to verify the environmental label. By entering details such as registration number and fuel type, you can obtain the corresponding classification. Likewise, vehicle inspection (ITV) reports also contain details about emissions and vehicle type.
