The past month of July saw the implementation of the new truck regulations, aimed at improving the driving experience and preventing the risk of accidents. In this way, the new truck models will feature various built‑in innovations, representing a clear step forward towards road safety.

What is mandatory to carry in the truck?

As a result of the new law implemented, freight vehicles must have various systems integrated to give sufficient advance warning of different actions, thus increasing safety on the road and creating an optimal and pleasant environment for traffic. Below, we list some of the most important changes:

Emergency braking lights. Trucks will have a special brake light that will alert other drivers whenever the truck driver intends to brake.
Speed control. This is a system that will detect if the driver exceeds the permitted speed limit, informing them to slow down.
Fatigue detection. Through this system, the driver will be warned if they have been driving for too long without a break, suggesting they rest.
Blind spot information. This function is essential so that the driver can see if there are cyclists or objects in the vehicle’s blind spots. They will also be informed of the possible presence of people or other elements on the road before starting to move.
Breathalyser. The truck itself will have this device, and a locking system will be activated if the driver has consumed alcohol.
Tyre pressure monitoring. The vehicle will monitor the condition of the tyres and inform the driver when they lose pressure.

In addition to these measures, the new law is intended to reduce pollutant emissions through the use of alternative fuels that respect the environment and the adoption of more efficient engines in heavy vehicles.

Truck regulations: respecting driving hours

In order to minimise accidents and increase user safety and health, the European Union has introduced a series of mandatory measures relating to driving times for heavy vehicle drivers. In this way, it is established that drivers may not drive trucks for more than 9 consecutive hours each day.

However, it is possible to drive for a total of 10 hours, but this only applies for 2 days a week. In any case, they may not drive for more than 56 hours per week. Likewise, it is essential that they take the necessary breaks during those hours, to rest properly and get back on the road as normal.
