Four most common types of breakage

To give an idea, repairing chips in car glass is much more common than it might seem. One of the most frequent incidents regarding car glass is a broken windscreen, which accounts for around 70% of all vehicle window damage. Thus, a broken car glass can mainly be caused by:

  1. Surface wear. This is a slight, small mark in the form of a scratch on the car glass. Normally, this damage does not pose a serious problem, although it is advisable to repair windscreen “scratches” as soon as possible, as it is a quick and simple process. If we decide not to fix it for now, we must at least monitor how the break or scratch develops.
  2. Cracked breakage. This is considered the most serious and dangerous type of damage, since a single deep scratch can cause the entire glass to shatter when exposed to any external force, such as a pothole or poorly maintained road. As damage in these cases is usually irreparable, it is recommended to repair cracked glass immediately.
  3. Bull’s‑eye. This is a type of breakage that is easy to identify at first glance. It has the shape of a conical hole measuring between 1 and 2.5 centimetres in diameter and is located on the outside of the windscreen. In general, there is little risk that the broken glass will later crack further. However, the main problem is the difficulty in vision, so windscreen repair is highly recommended.
  4. Bull’s‑eye with micro‑cracks. Finally, this type of breakage is very similar to the previous one but has a series of cracks stemming from the same impact. If impacts form a star‑shaped pattern, it is important to repair them immediately, as otherwise they could spread across the entire glass surface.
