The heated rear window: function and how to repair it

During the hot months it is normal that we have not planned the proper check of the rear heated window. But as autumn progresses and with the arrival of low temperatures, we must solve and check all those issues that may catch us by surprise in the middle of winter.

Thus, it is essential that we take care of each part of our car according to the different seasons of the year. One of these aspects involves the car’s rear window.

Despite this possibility, if in your car the rear heated window does not work, you should know that nowadays there are several forms of repair. However, due to the technical aspects that it involves, it is necessary that you take it to a car glass workshop so that they can fix it in case you cannot do it yourself.

Before telling you how you can repair it, let’s see what the heated window is and the reasons why it could break down. We tell you about it at Ralarsa!

What is the heated window?

The heated window refers to the part of the rear windshield that is easily identifiable by its pattern of horizontal lines. These lines are connected to negative and positive charges on each side of the rear windshield, specifically on the vehicle’s chassis.

The main function of the heated window is to maintain the proper temperature inside the passenger compartment and to prevent fogging, thus contributing to safety when reversing or monitoring the presence of other cars around.

Why might the rear heated window break down?

It is important to note that when it is mentioned that the rear heated window does not work, it does not refer to the glass itself, but to the lines or wires that form the circuit.

Among the most common reasons that can cause part of the circuit to stop working are pulling off a sticker abruptly, the constant use of strong chemical products on the glass, simple wear and tear, or other environmental and seasonal incidents.

Likewise, unless a part of the conductive wire or circuit is missing, it is difficult to identify the problem if the car owner has no automotive knowledge. For this reason, below we tell you how to repair the rear heated window if it has one or more damaged circuits.

What does the repair of the rear heated window consist of?

To carry out the repair of the rear heated window, the person in charge must have two essential materials. These are: resin, glue or adhesive conductive of electricity based on silver, and a test lamp.

  1. First of all, you must remove the side cover of the rear windshield so that this part of the chassis is uncovered.
  2. The next step will be to identify on which side of the chassis the positive and negative poles are located respectively. Once identified, you must disconnect the negative part and leave only the positive part connected to the chassis.
  3. In parallel, you must connect the test lamp to the chassis, whose tip is similar to that of a screwdriver.
  4. Then, slide the tip of the test lamp along the conductive wire. If the lamp lights up, the circuit works. If the lamp does not light up, there is a problem in that area.
  5. Once you have identified the area where the circuit of the rear heated window does not work, apply the glue or adhesive. Repeat the same procedure in all the affected areas.
  6. Then you must start the car and activate the defogger; in this way, the parts of the circuit that have been correctly repaired, or if there is any point you have not noticed, you will be able to identify them more easily.

These materials can be found in a repair kit available in the entire automotive trade. Likewise, remember that if you cannot carry it out, a car glass workshop is the safest and most recommended option to repair everything related to the windshield of your vehicle. Trust Ralarsa’s experience and track record for this.

It should be mentioned that sometimes this circuit is damaged due to deeper electrical problems whose solution is found in the chassis or the car’s battery. For this reason, unless you are an automotive mechanic or have proven knowledge in the repair of this type of incident, it will be necessary to go to a workshop that offers the repair service for the car’s rear window.
