Low-emission zones: What are they?
Low-emission zones (LEZ) are areas where access and parking for highly polluting vehicles are restricted. The aim of these zones, which are always defined by a public administration, is to improve air quality in cities and urban environments and, as a consequence, improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.
Currently, there are low-emission zones in all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, which means they are present in at least 149 municipalities in Spain. This is why it’s so important to be informed — otherwise, you could receive a fine.
Just for entering irregularly, the fine can be up to 200 euros. Remember, you can also be fined if a broken windshield hinders your visibility when driving. To be safe and avoid any setbacks, we recommend that you visit our car glass workshop, where we specialise in car window repair.
Do you want to know if your vehicle will be affected by these access restrictions? To find out, you just need to check or obtain the environmental label that corresponds to your vehicle. Environmental labels are used to classify cars from most to least polluting according to their CO2 emissions. These labels are as follows:
- Label B: Vehicles with the B label, yellow in colour, correspond to petrol cars registered from 2001 and diesel cars from 2006.
- Label C: The C label, green in colour, corresponds to petrol cars registered from 2006 and diesel cars from 2015.
- Eco label: The Eco label, blue and green in colour, corresponds to most hybrid and gas vehicles, as well as non-plug-in or plug-in vehicles with a range of less than 40 km.
- Zero emissions label: This blue label includes all battery-powered vehicles, as well as range-extended electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles with a range of more than 40 km.
